“There is no greater agony, than bearing an untold story inside you."
- Maya Angelou
One of my hobbies is reading. I will get lost in people’s memoirs and biographies. I am always intrigued by the unfolding of their stories and how they have navigated through the ups and downs of life. Yet at times our stories can get stuck in the same loop making it difficult to find a different path. It could be that your record player needle is stuck in a scratch on the record, or you are looping the same musical phrase. As I understood more about myself, I knew that I wanted the privilege of listening to people’s stories in a therapeutic setting, helping them broaden and create new possibilities to their story, move beyond the scratch or add another musical pattern to their loop.
I was born into a biracial family separated by divorce. I have lived throughout the US and overseas as an expat transitioning from one culture to another, moving continents, houses, children, schools, experiencing the difficulties of being separated from loved ones and learning to adapt and thrive in new time zones! These moves and life transitions taught me how special and different we are as individuals, the cultural influences on how we make meaning, and how intertwined we are as humans. Having a deep understanding of how our upbringing brings a rich history to our individual stories, our sessions together will grow with cultural sensitivity.
As a survivor of traumatic experiences, I understand how trauma affects our trust in relationships with others and with ourselves. Survivors can have strong feelings of shame, worthlessness, lack a sense of belonging, and beliefs that that the abuse was their fault. Survivors of traumatic experiences often hold this experience in their bodies which can affects our interactions with others and their physical wellbeing. My passion is to work with individuals, couples, families, and friendships to understand, repair, and move through the impact of trauma to develop deeper more meaningful relationships.
I work with clients collaboratively to uncover new perspectives, process challenging emotions, explore their strengths, and develop new meanings. As we acknowledge and nurture different parts of ourselves, self-agency and self-compassion increases where internal wounds and conflicts dissipate, creating a deeper understanding of the self. This leads to stronger connections with our partners, friends, and coworkers.
I earned my bachelor’s from Colorado School of Mines in Colorado. I received a Master of Psychology from Our Lady of The Lake University, Houston specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy with training at the Michael DeBakey Veterans Affair Medical Center. Currently I practice as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate and Licensed Professional Counselor. I draw upon various therapeutic modalities including Narrative Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Collaborative Dialogic Practices, Solution Focused Therapy, Mindfulness, Brainspotting (BSP), and somatic therapies.
